Course Description

Can we find an orientation within the most recent developments of musical literature?

Music since 1975 consists of lectures, listening, score analysis, readings and group projects designed to expose student to some of the main trends of the last 30 years of music history. We will study music by composers like Anthony Braxton, Giacinto Scelsi, Frederic Rzewski, György Kurtag, and discuss their backgrounds (cultural, spiritual, ethnic), musical styles and notation. We will also discuss performance practice, marketing modern music, and what makes for artistic and commercial success.
