COMPOSER BIOGRAPHY – PREPARATION 9

(F-08)

For 26 Nov

Read the following selections.  They deal with Charles Ives’s ideas – about music, philosophy, business and politics.

Frank Rossiter, Charles Ives and His America (1975), 126-144;

Charles Ives, Essays Before a Sonata (1922), 21-31;

Jan Swafford, Charles Ives – A Life with Music (1996), 194-212; 291-305;

J. Peter Burkholder, Charles Ives – The Ideas Behind the Music (1985), 95-109

In addition, please listen to the first movement (Emerson) of the Concord Sonata.  I put a CD and a score on reserve.

Please prepare an answer to the following question:  Explain something in one or more of these presentations of Charles Ives’s ideas that influences your understanding of the first movement of the Concord Sonata.  (If nothing seems to be relevant to what you hear, then discuss that.)
