MHL 654 - HAYDN SEMINAR
BIBLIOGRAPHY ASSIGNMENT
(S-10)
Purpose – The purpose of this assignment is
to give you a workout with the bibliographic tools we covered in plenary
sessions and (with luck) to point you toward a paper topic.
Product – This assignment will generate a bibliography,
partially annotated, of at least 15 items, pertaining to one specific area of
Haydn's life and/or works.
Pick
area – Choose one of
the following areas for your bibliography.
Try to pick one that you think might contain a paper topic for you. Note that these areas are much larger than your
paper topic will be.
a) A genre, chosen from the following:
symphonies, string quartets, piano trios, piano sonatas, operas, songs, baryton trios, masses, other sacred music, oratorios
b) An analytical topic chosen from the
following: sonata-allegro forms, variation forms, slow movements, minuets
c) Reception: of Haydn's works in his
time, of Haydn's works from 1809 until the present, changing views of Haydn's
character
d) Haydn's personal relations: with
his family, with Mozart, with Mrs. Genzinger, with
women in general, with Prince Nikolaus
e) An episode in Haydn's life: Boyhood, Freelance in Vienna, Eszterházy-1
(before Eszterház palace), Eszterházy-2 (before 1779),
Eszterházy-3 (1779-90), London
f) Performance practice: Harpsichord vs. piano, size of performing
forces, use of continuo, rehearsal
g) An area that you choose yourself
(consult with me via Email)
Assemble
bibliography – Make a
list of 15 sources that provide information about the area you've chosen. Try to include at least one source from each of the following seven source types:
primary source linked to Haydn, primary source linked to contemporaries, book,
article, dissertation, internet source, musical score. You will find sources by using the
bibliographic resources posted in the plenary handouts and by following up on
footnotes in other sources. For each
source please give enough bibliographic particulars that I could locate it
easily (author, title, date, pages, URL).
Please don't put more than 3 musical scores on your list.
Annotate
bibliography – Locate
and read (i.e. skim) 7 of the items in your bibliography. (Use the plenary handouts to locate
materials.) For each item write a couple
of sentences characterizing that source.
What is its subject? Does it make an argument? Does it seem trustworthy? Does it raise a question that interests you?
Etc.
