In addition,
please read the following excerpts from A. Peter Brown, Joseph Haydn's Keyboard Music – Sources and style:
pp.

pp.
134-36, 144-60 (which keyboard instrument?)
pp.
233-242 (genres of keyboard music)
Brown's book
is on reserve in the library, and I've posted these excerpts online.
Please write short answers to the following
questions:
Pick one of the pieces above and
discuss which keyboard instrument or instruments Haydn may have intended it
for. Argue from 2 or more passages in
the score.
Review Peter Brown's discussion of the
professional vs. amateur market for keyboard music. Pick one of the pieces above (a different piece)
and discuss whether you think it was aimed at professionals or amateurs? Both?
Discus with reference to specific passages.
Type your answers and bring them to class. If you have any questions, send me an Email.
PS – You may
want to check out an article by James Webster about “improvisation” in Haydn’s
piano sonatas and trios. It’s too detailed to read for class, but if the topic
interests you, it will give you a framework, not just for Haydn but for Mozart
and Beethoven as well. I put a xerox in the library
and it’s linked to this prep online.
