MHL 654: Joseph Haydn: Life and Works

Course Description

The course considers Haydn as a man, as a composer and as a leading figure in the European Enlightenment. We will construct a picture of Haydn from contemporary letters, biographies, concert programs, reviews and poetry. We will listen to and study a selection of works ina variety of genres, including symphonies, operas, string quartets, piano sonatas and trios, masses and baryton trios. Like other proseminars, the course emphasizes reading, research and writing about music history.
