HISTORY 203 – PREPARATION 2

(S-12)

For Tuesday Jan 26

Listen to the first and second movements of the Bach concerto for oboe and violin BWV 1060 R.  It’s the first selection on the “Supplementary listening” CD in the library.  There’s a score on reserve in a binder in the library and also posted as a PDF file on the website. at:  http://sfcmhistory.com/Spitzer/History_203/scores/Bach_Concerto_1060.pdf

Also on the website you’ll find a little program note I’ve written about this concerto.  Look for it at: http://www.sfcmhistory.com/Spitzer/History_203/Supplementary_listening.htm.

Answer the following questions:

1.  Make a diagram of the first movement of this concerto.  Show ritornello vs. episode, scoring (solo vs. tutti), themes, and key areas.  Use my diagram of Vivaldi Op. 3 # 6 as a model.  Show only the broad key areas.  Don’t be misled by transitory harmonies.  You should come out with something like 5 key areas in the movement.

2.  Look at the distribution of solo and tutti passages into ritornellos and episodes in the first movements of both works.  Discuss how the Bach concerto differs from the Vivaldi concerto in this respect.

3.  Explain the relation between the violin and oboe concerto (BWV 1060 R) and the two-harpsichord concerto (BWV 1060).

4.  Listen to the second movement in the 2-harpsichord version.  It’s not on the supplementary CD, but you’ll find it on Naxos by searching for BWV 1060.[1]  Do you agree with the musicologist who thought this was originally a violin-oboe concerto?  Why or why not?

You may write out your answers by hand or you may type them.  They are due at the end of class next Tuesday.  If there’s anything about the assignment you don’t understand, write me an Email.

[1]  You’ll need a login name and password to use Naxos.  Use “sfcmmm” for both.
