SYMPHONY SEMINAR – SOURCES FOR PAPER
(F-09)
Due Monday
9 Nov
By now you
should have located and surveyed a fair number of sources for your term
paper. Please answer the following
questions about sources you’ve found or that you find this week:
1) Have you found a source you thought was
really excellent? What makes it so good
in your opinion?
2) List a
source that you thought was useless. Is
it a total piece of trash, or just useless for your purposes?
3) Did you find leverage in a source – i.e.
something that pointed you toward an idea, a hypothesis or a refinement of your
topic? Explain. (Note: you may find
leverage in a musical source.)
4) How would you categorize the musical sources
you are using: facsimile, diplomatic, critical, interpretive?
5) Name a source you tried to locate but
couldn’t. Do you really need it? If so, what are you going to do about this?
6) Do you need help from me developing or
locating sources? Just ask!
7) Finally, please write out for me again a
concise description of your topic.
If one or
more of the questions above isn’t applicable to your topic, just say so. When you refer to source, please give
bibliographic particulars as though you were citing it in a footnote. For a guide as to what a citation should look
like, you can refer to: http://library.williams.edu/citing/styles/chicago1.php. Don’t get obsessive about this; just give me
a good enough cite that I can quickly find the item if I need it.
Hand in
your (typed) responses next week and ALSO send them to me as an Email (jspitzer@sfcm.edu).
