SYMPHONY SEMINAR -- PREPARATION 8
(F-09)
For Monday
Nov 9
Please read
the following four sections from the New
Groves article on Joseph Haydn. The
author is James Webster:
Eszterhazy Court
(3.i) Vice-Kapellmeister, 1761–5.
Eszterhazy Court (3.ii)
Kapellmeister, 1766–90.
Eszterhazy Court (3.iv) Independence,
1779–90.
You can
look them up in Groves via the library website, and I’ve also posted them
online.
In addition
please listen to Symphony #45 in f# minor (the Farewell Symphony). It’s on reserve in the library and available
on Naxos. I’ve posted a score
online.
Write a brief,
personal response to the following question:
How is the Farewell Symphony similar to Dittersdorf’s ‘Fall of Phaeton’
symphony? How does it differ?
In class
I’ll cover symphonies #2, 6, and 46 as well, but you don’t need to prepare
them.
Remember
your assignment on sources is due this week too.
