Google Books (books.google.com) – online access to books, in whole or in part.

Google Scholar (scholar.google.com) – searches across a range of scholarly information including books, articles, and citations. Caution: At the moment Scholar is stronger in the sciences than in the humanities (incl. music).

                    Wikipedia – getting better all the time.  Use with some caution.

WorldCat (OCLC):  www.worldcat.org  (WorldCat is a union catalog of thousands of libraries.  Use it to get an idea of whether a piece exists and how many different versions and editions there are.  Also available via SFPL "articles and databases": www.sfpl.org )

Library of Congress: http://catalog.loc.gov/ (The Library of Congress has a huge music collection.  You can use it like WorldCat to identify editions.)

Hints: Use "advanced" instead of "basic" search to search library catalogs.  Restrict your search to "scores" or "printed music"
