First drafts of your papers are due next week, so I don't want to give you a lot of preparation on top of that.

In class we'll discuss some modern adaptations of traditional Chinese opera . If possible:

John Adams – Nixon in China (1976)

Judith Weir – A Night at the Chinese Opera (1987)

Tan Dun and Peter Sellars: The Peony Pavilion (2002)

Check out the background on these three works if you have the time. But I'll do the preparation and presentation.

PS – I expect you to turn in your papers after class. But please don't cut class if your paper isn't quite finished. Come to class and tell me when I can expect it. We need everyone in class so we can schedule tutorials.
