THE
MUSIC HISTORY UNDERGRADUATE CURRICULUM
The
undergraduate Music History curriculum was revised in the Fall
of 2006 by a vote of the Faculty Assembly.
The new courses began in the academic year 2007-2008.
The
new curriculum consists of a sequence of three 2-unit courses, plus one 3-unit
history and literature elective. The core
sequence is numbered MHL 202/203/204. It
provides a chronological survey from the Middle Ages
to the 21st century. We recommend that students take MHL 202/203/204 in
order. History electives may be chosen
from courses in the MHL 400-500 range. (MMT 252-253 can also be counted as a history elective.) Electives
investigate a single topic in depth and introduce students to music history
research and writing skills. Students may also take a second Music History and
Lit elective if they like, to satisfy the “other MMT/MHL
series course” requirement.
A
few students may encounter a problem with the transition from the pre-2007 curriculum to the present curriculum. Students who have any problem should let their advisors know and should send an email to John Spitzer (jspitzer@sfcm.edu) explaining
their problem. The History Department
will make all necessary accommodations, but you have to let us know promptly so
we can work things out.
